Mother’s Curse {Book Review}

As you may know, I’m a huge fan of YA novels, and I had the chance to review Mother’s Curse, a new YA fantasy novel by Thaddeus Nowak.  Make sure to check out my earlier posts for an excerpt (and they are on sale right now on Amazon for only 99 cents!).

Mother’s Curse is about a young princess, named Stephanie, who is essentially held prisoner by her mother while her father and brother is off at war.  Stephanie is definitely not a girly girl; she fights and talks like one of her father’s soldiers.  Stephanie is also a witch – but this is kept a secret and she has no idea how to control her magic.  She becomes aware of a plot to sacrifice her to rid her mother of the curse she has that prevents her from harming Stephanie. Stephanie manages to escape and meets a rather interesting friend named Kas.  Without giving too much away, Stephanie journeys on to search for her father and brother, and finds herself, and friends along the way.

I really enjoyed the book – it had the right amount of magic, suspense, and romance to make the book enjoyable.  I loved the strong female character – Stephanie did not take crap from anyone!  In terms of a young adult novel, I would say that this is for an older teen, at least from my perspective.  The story line would not ordinarily have been too bad for my 12 year old daughter, but I felt like some of the language was a bit strong for her.

I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy fantasy or historical fiction!  I enjoyed it a great deal and I can’t wait to read the second novel.
